Eat At The Bar
In talking with people about traveling alone for work or pleasure, I’ve heard feedback about how uncomfortable or intimidating eating alone can be. Thus, the name of this site: Table For One. However, eating alone at your own table may not be the best route. I highly recommend eating at the bar if one is available. Here are some benefits to eating at the bar at a restaurant:
- You won’t feel alone – bartenders and wait staff tend to walk around and chat, often checking in to make sure you are enjoying yourself
- Food service at the bar is very common
- Bar tenders tend to be the best local guides, willing to give advice and ideas on places to go and see
- During busy hours, it’s often quicker to grab a seat at the bar then wait for a table
- You absolutely do not need to order an alcoholic drink to sit at the bar
Inquire At Hotel About Local Events
This can vary from hotel to hotel, but it never hurts to inquire about any local events that may be going on. I’ve received complimentary tickets to minor league baseball games, movie theaters, and a number of discounts and offers at local restaurants. You never know what may be available, so a quick ask can turn into a great day or evening out.
Try Eating At An Eat/Play Location
There are a number of these places around the country – think Top Golf, Dave & Busters, Drive Shack, Bowling Alleys, Punch Bowl Social, and the like. It’s a great option to get a meal and be entertained all at the same time. A quick search of the area you are staying will generally have some options available. I recently discovered a new business with locations in Louisiana and Texas called Loft 18 that offers indoor golf simulators as well as a full line of food and drink.
